OBJECTIVE

Our goal is to spotlight the people's history of Jersey City, NJ.

As artists, we approach this effort as an artistic endeavor. We hope to learn more about our collective history together with our community.

BACK STORY

In 2017, visual artist, JJ, embarked on a long journey of researching for the project under a few different names. While working on clarifying her intentions, she made multiple iterations with titles like Selfish Umbrella, GLAD THAT'S OVER, and 538 Bergen Ave. In 2021, she approached her friend, community organizer, and photographer, DS, for help. With his experience in local community outreach, WERE HERE JC was able to reach more people in Jersey City through word of mouth and social media.
